Liquid Level Transmitters
Liquid Level Transmitters detect levels of liquids. Liquid level transmitters also detect interfaces between liquids such as oil and water. You will find liquid-level transmitters in storage, transport, and water storage tanks. These transmitters measure the level by measuring the head pressure of the liquid.
Ultrasonic Level Transmitter
Ultrasonic transducers mounted at or near the top of a container use an ultrasonic pulse. The pulse hits the surface of the liquid and reflects. The sensor then calculates the fill level based on the time between the transmitted and received signal.
Capacitance Level Transmitters
The principle of capacitive level measurement is based on a change in capacitance. An insulated electrode acts as one capacitor plate, and the tank wall acts as the other plate. The capacitance depends on the fluid level. An empty tank has a lower capacitance, while a filled tank has a higher capacitance. By measuring the variations in capacitance, the transmitters calculate the fill level of the tank.
Hydrostatic Level Transmitters
A hydrostatic level sensor measures the hydrostatic pressure in a liquid at a pre-determined depth. Hydrostatic level sensors measure fluid levels by the pressure of the resting body of the fluid within the vessel. The greater the force of liquid, the greater the volume of fluid.
Magnetic Level Transmitters
These transmitters use a magnetic object suspended in a buoyant float. This transmitter is suitable for continuous measurement due to the rise and sink of the float based on the liquid level. Utilizing a combination of proven buoyancy principles with the benefits of magnetism, magnetic-level transmitters can fit almost any process.
Radar Fill Level Transmitters
These transmitters work on the principle of radar based on electromagnetic waves at a range of 10GHz under microwave X-band bandwidth. Mounted at the top of a tank filled with a liquid, the transmitter sends a radar signal into the liquid and receives a reflection of the signal. The transmitter then analyzes the current fill level of the tank based on the time the transmitted signal takes to return.
Guided Microwave Level Transmitters
These transmitters send a microwave pulse through a sensor cable or rod. The signal hits the surface of the liquid and travels back to the sensor. The electronics integrated into the transmitter housing determine the fill level based on the time taken by the signal to travel down the sensor and back.

Slurry Flowmeter

Ultrasonic Level Transmitter

Ultrasonic level transmitter working principle is based on the principle of time of flight. It is a non-contact type level transmitter that is installed on the top of the tank above the process media in the tank. Audible Sound Frequency is up to 20kHz. Above 20kHz is Ultrasonic sound which is used to measure the level. Ultrasonic Level detection operates by the resonance ring time of an ultrasound signal transmitted from and received by the same sensor mounted on the top of the tank. It’s a simple matter of digital electronics to calculate the level of the process fluid or solid know the speed of the signal & the time of flight . This happens on a continuous basis.

Slurry Flowmeter

Radar Level Transmitter

The Microwave signal reflects from the top of the process surface & the same time of flight principle applies here too. The amount of microwave reflected depends upon the dielectric constant of the process media. The advantage of Microwave Technology is these signals are relatively un effected by changes in pressure & temperature in the process & very accurate. Of course, here the Radar signals travel along guide wires while the same principle of time of flight applies here too.

Magnetic Flow Meter

Hydrostatic Level Transmitter

The hydrostatic level transmitter works based on pressure measurement. The working principle of hydrostatic level transmitter pressure at the bottom of a vertical vessel containing materials is directly proportional to the height of the vessel. This principle allows us to measure the level (height) of liquid in a vessel. Hydrostatic level transmitters are loop-powered and cost-effective transmitters that measure the liquid level accurately. As the hydrostatic level transmitter is in compact size it fits perfectly with smaller size pipes. Due to its high reliability and robustness, it is highly popular among industries.

Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Level Meter

1.Measurement
A level transmitter is perfect for a condition where the exact level of fluid needs to be measured. This is usually preferred for applications where precise measurement becomes a necessity. A level switch is an ideal choice for applications where extremely low or high levels need to be measured. These devices help prevent leaks, overfills, and dry situations.
2.Understand Environmental Factors
The choice of a level transmitter or a level switch will depend on various environmental factors such as:
Pressure and Temperature
Effects of temperature and pressure on transmitters or level switches may vary if the material undergoes a transition from one state to another. These devices are available in different materials and designs. So, you need to understand the temperature and pressure impact on a particular material, before selecting them for your application.
● Range of Measurement
Continuous level transmitters are used for level sensing dry or liquid materials within a specified range. They measure over a large range of levels which helps the user understand the right amount of substance. Most continuous level transmitters produce an analog output to indicate the level of fluid in the container. Against this, level switches are suited for point measurements.
● Type of Output
Level switches and transmitters are suited for producing different types of outputs – relay, analog, and digital.
● Chemical Compatibility
These level sensing devices may be used with a variety of liquid media. At times, the housing of the transmitter may come in contact with the media, which may affect its integrity. It is important to address the concern of the impact of different chemical media on sensors.
● Tank Size and Shape
The choice of level sensing device may also depend on the tank size and shape. Extra narrow or wide tanks may have specific requirements.
A fair consideration of these factors will aid you in making the right selection.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Flowmeters

Q: What is the importance of level transmitter?

A: Level Transmitters are used in mass-producing factories, such as material industry, to measure amount stored in silos and tanks that store raw materials and products. In factories, it is necessary to continuously send raw materials to next process so that production does not stop.

Q: What is difference between level switch and level transmitter?

A: A level switch is a device that operates by sensing the fluid level and turning it off or on, depending on the result. On the other hand, a level transmitter works by continuously measuring the level and transmitting data to a controller.

Q: What is the most common type of level transmitter?

A: Hydrostatic Level Transmitters
This is one of the most common types of liquid level detection devices. It is critical that the density of the fluid remains constant to ensure accurate measurement. As the gravity of the fluid increases, the pressure per cubic inch applied to the transmitter also increases.

Q: How does level transmitter work?

A: A level transmitter is used to measure the level of a liquid in an open or closed tank. It works by sending out a signal proportional to the fluid level and then measuring this signal with its sensing element.

Q: Is a level transmitter a sensor?

A: A level transmitter is a special version of a pressure sensor in order to measure levels in tanks, fountains, chambers and boreholes. To reach a most precise measurement the transmitter is placed directly in the liquid and as near as possible to the bottom.

Q: What is the signal of level transmitter?

A: These transmitters send a microwave pulse through a sensor cable or rod. The signal hits the surface of the liquid and travels back to the sensor. The electronics integrated into the transmitter housing determine the fill level based on the time taken by the signal to travel down the sensor and back.

Q: What is the output of a level transmitter?

A: The level transmitter is set with a variable output signal of 4-20 mA. For instance, the level transmitter for a 20-meter high tank will read 20 mA for a full tank, 4 mA for an empty tank, and 10 mA for a half tank. These devices may perform the level measurement in point values or continuously.

Q: Where is the level transmitter located?

A: The normal DP type with impulse tubing type level transmitter should always be lower than the high liquid level or below the lower liquid level in the drum/column. Always mount the level transmitter below the liquid level so the low pressure (LP) tapping is always filled with liquid.

Q: What is the difference between a level transmitter and a transducer?

A: Transducers and transmitters are virtually the same thing, the main difference being the kind of electrical signal each sends. A transducer sends a signal in volts (V) or millivolt (mV) and a transmitter sends a signal in milliamps (mA).

Q: How to troubleshoot Radar Level Transmitters?

A: Whether the Power Supply Is Normal
If we find that the radar level gauge changes very slowly or does not change at all after the liquid level rises to a certain value on the production site, first of all, it is necessary to check whether the fuse of the equipment is burned out. If there is no current output, it can basically be judged that there is a problem with the instrument. Replace or repair as necessary.
Whether the Communication Equipment is Normal
Once the communication equipment is found abnormal, we can install radar debugging software to read the configuration data and monitor the status of the radar sensor, mainly to check whether the radar sensor can accurately judge the difference between the reflected echo and the false echo, and whether the intensity of the reflected wave reaches the predetermined standard. If there is no problem with the above tests, other electronic components need to be checked. If it is judged that the communication unit is damaged, the components need to be replaced as appropriate.
Whether the Displayed Value is Accurate
Inaccurate value is a common problem with radar level gauges. The cause may be that the initial setting is not proper, or because the plug-in connection of the display module is incorrect. Once it is found that the displayed value is not visible, we should check the initial setting of the radar level gauge and check whether the connection of the display module plug-in is normal. Otherwise, further check whether the output current of the radar is normal, and replace the electronic module in time.
Measured Value Fluctuations
In the tank, due to the violent fluctuation of the surface of the stirring medium, or the enhancement of the temporary interference echo in the tank due to feeding, the measured value fluctuates. In addition to improving application parameters, activating near-field suppression, and increasing output damping, we should also check the installation location of the meter, or consider installing a larger antenna.
Whether the System Displays Error
When the system displays an error message, it is generally possible that the power supply was cut off before the end of data storage. At this time, we need to verify, reset and re-calibrate. If the alarm is still issued, the electronic module of the radar level gauge needs to be replaced.
Diffuse Reflection
Diffuse reflection refers to the phenomenon that light projected on a rough surface is reflected in all directions. When the liquid level is low or there is no liquid level, the biggest reason may be that there are brackets and pipes at the bottom of the container, or steam is generated during the process, which forms diffuse reflection on the radar wave. At this time, we can restart it for automatic recovery after the liquid level is normal. The diffuse reflection caused by steam will automatically recover after the temperature is normal.

Q: What are some common applications for level transmitters?

A: Level transmitters are used in a variety of industries such as oil and gas, water treatment, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and energy. They are often used to monitor the levels of liquids, granulars, slurries, and interfaces in tanks, silos, and hoppers.

Q: What is the difference between a contact and a non-contact level transmitter?

A: Contact level transmitters are in direct contact with the material they are measuring, like float level transmitters. Non-contact level transmitters do not come into contact with the material, such as radar and ultrasonic level transmitters.

Q: Can you explain how a radar-level transmitter works?

A: A radar-level transmitter emits radio waves toward the surface of the material. These waves reflect back to the transmitter. By calculating the time it takes for the waves to return, the transmitter can determine the distance and, therefore, the level of the material.

Q: What is the principle behind ultrasonic-level transmitters?

A: Ultrasonic level transmitters work on the principle of time of flight. They emit an ultrasonic pulse toward the material. This pulse reflects back to the transmitter, and by calculating the time it took for the pulse to return, the transmitter can determine the level.

Q: How would you troubleshoot a faulty level transmitter?

A: Troubleshooting a level transmitter involves checking the power supply, wiring, the condition of the sensor, and the output signal. One would also need to check the configuration settings and make sure they are correct for the specific application.

Q: What are the factors that can affect the accuracy of a level transmitter?

A: Factors such as temperature changes, pressure variations, buildup on the sensor, dielectric constant changes, and changes in the material’s properties can affect the accuracy of a level transmitter.

Q: How can you prevent build-up on level transmitter sensors?

A: Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prevent build-up. Choosing the right type of level transmitter for the application can also help, as some types are less prone to build-up than others.

Q: What is the working principle of electromechanical level transmitter?

A: In this electromechanical level transmitter, a sensor weight is lowered into the vessel containing the process material. When the sensor weight hits the material, the tensile force of the weight is reduced which triggers a change in rotation of the motor, which brings the sensor back to the upper stop position. Thus level is measured electronically while the weight is lowered. The obtained measurements are processed by microprocessors then converted into a volumetric output signal. It can be used in undesirable or extreme conditions as it is not affected by sound waves, dust, static electricity, humidity, dielectric etc.

Q: What are the advantages of using a level transmitter?

A: Level transmitters offer benefits such as continuous level measurement, accurate readings, remote monitoring capabilities, and suitability for various substances and environments.

Q: How accurate are level transmitters?

A: An ultrasonic water level sensor reading a full-scale range of 144 inches will have an accuracy of ±0.36 inches (at ambient temperature).
